Alpha Delta Gamma was founded at the Lake Shore Campus of Loyola University of Chicago in 1924. The founding fathers first conceived the idea of founding a new, unique fraternity during a ride on Chicago's "L" (The elevated railway). They realized the need for an organization quite different from those existing on their campus.

The founding fathers envisioned a new concept in fraternities - one based upon the traditions, ideals of true brotherhood, and missionary zeal of Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, and Issac Jogues. They saw five specific areas of development for students at Catholic colleges- the spiritual, the scholastic, service to college and community, encouragement of school spirit among fellow students, and the social. In effect, they wanted a fraternity founded upon Christian ideals of true manhood, sound learning, and the unity of fraternal brotherhood.

These ideals were decreed the purpose of Alpha Delta Gamma when it first came into being.
And so the foundation was set, Alpha Delta Gamma was on its way to becoming a city walled!

Our Mission

  • To unite congenial minded men in a Brotherhood of love and high respect
  • To develop the highest Christian ideals of manhood among its members
  • To foster the interest of every institution of learning with which it shall become affiliated
  • To promote scholarship among its members and their fellow student
  • To further promote service of community so as to awaken in ourselves and our fellow man, a realization of the Brotherhood of Man
"For over 85 years our brothers have also been dedicated members of the Saint Louis University community.  The key to our longevity and success can be found in the similarities between our mission and that of the University.  As brothers of ΑΔΓ we are continually challenged to live the Jesuit Mission as "men for others."

Our Values - The Five S's

Scholastic

During an AlphaDelt's college career, there is an immediate emphasis placed upon academic excellence. Our Fraternity believes that learning is not practiced just in the classroom, but is a process of examination, discovery, and participation in all human relations. Learning includes a liberal minded search for truth through the cultivation of intellect.

Spiritual

Alpha Delta Gamma uses its close-knit brotherhood to develop the attitudes of a complete Christian within an individual. Once founded as a Catholic oriented fraternity, the Alpha Delta Gamma man believes in the right of all brothers to follow the principles and practices of his own religion. Our Fraternity also develops Christian ideals through "mutual encouragement and good example".

Furthermore, in Alpha Delta Gamma we believe that spirituality extends beyond religion and is also the regimented and practiced quest to become a better person.  As such, spirituality can be expressed in a multitude of ways, which are encompassed in the other four S's.

School Spirit

One's initial contact with the Fraternity occurs during his actual college days. Through a strong support for the institution he attends, the AlphaDelt displays one of his primary goals - the generation of enthusiastic and genuine school spirit.

At SLU our members are involved a multitude of different student organizations ranging from Oriflamme and Billiken Buddies to Campus Ministry and the Environmental Task Force.

Service

The Alpha Delta Gamma man finds time to serve his community in a brotherly effort. He is committed to serving God by serving man. By honoring this commitment, he has fulfilled his obligation "to the world of men about us".

At SLU we pride ourselves on our active role in the community.  In 2009 our chapter completed over 1000 hours of service at many locations both in St. Louis and throughout the country.

Social

Alpha Delta Gamma is also a social fraternity, believing in the development of the individual as a member of society. To the Fraternity, "social" means living in mutual respect of one's fellow brothers, enjoying companionship and cherishing life's special moments.

From organized events at venues throughout St. Louis to camping trips and pick-up basketball, the members of our chapter enjoy a variety of opportunities for social growth each semester.
